Skateboarding Tricks
Skateboarding has been popularized for the cool, sensational and intricate tricks and maneuvers that professionals perform. And as simple and easy as these professionals are making it seem, the truth is quite the opposite. It takes months and even years of practice to get the move right and perfect, with a lot of broken bones and cuts and bruises to go along with it.
If you are just starting out with skateboarding tricks and maneuvers, the best place to start is the Ollie. The Ollie is probably one of the basic and simplest tricks a skater should learn but the time for every individual to get it down pat has varied quite differently – it can range from a few weeks to more than a year of practicing. The Ollie is basically jumping off the ground and bringing your board along with you in the air. The Ollie is the most fundamental trick to learn as it will be the foundation for other skateboarding tricks that you will wish to learn in the future.
With this maneuver many have innovated different tricks such as spinning the board a few times while in the air, performing different body twists, spins, and movements while suspended in the air, and flips and turns. This is the most basic trick to learn because you can do it without needing a ramp or other elements in order to perform the trick. When you are able to achieve a good elevation on your Ollie and get your landing balance down pat then the next step would be to learn the more advanced tricks that are needed to combine with the Ollie to perform more advanced maneuvers.
Some of these advanced techniques are the 180 Ollie which is basically doing an Ollie but adding a 180 spin while in the air and the Heelflip, which is the twisting or flipping of the board while in the air. Once you get the Ollie and the other more complex maneuvers, the harder tricks would basically just be learning to perform them successively or repeatedly or a combination of both. One such move is the 180 Ollie kickflip which just basically combines the Ollie with a 180 spin and the kickflip.
Another type of trick that is performed with street skateboarding is the slide and grind. The edge is the area that the Grind is performed. This can usually be a rail, ledge, coping, or a wall. Several advanced variations are being innovated to make them harder and cooler to perform such as the Bertleman Slide, Lipslide, Nose Grab Tail Drag, and many more.
Skateboarding tricks that are performed on ramps are harder and needs more experienced skaters. The Axle Stall is a fundamental ramp trick usually performed in a mini ramp or a quarterpipe. To do the Axle Stall the skater must be an expert at performing the kickturn as it is fundamental in performing this trick, and of course, must be adequately experienced in skating in mini ramps and quarterpipes. Another trick done in the mini ramp or quarterpipe is the Rock to Fakie where when the skater reaches the top of the ramp he or she stops to balance the board on the coping for a few seconds before heading back down.
Whatever new trick that you want to learn next will all come down to your mastery of the fundamental tricks that are used as basis for the more advanced maneuvers. There are countless variations and ways skateboard tricks can be performed, and who knows? You might be able to come up with your very own unique trick.
